Why Does Attentional Blink Happen

Why Does Attentional Blink Happen Theories Cognitive Psychology Print Why Does Attentional Blink Happen? It only lasts for about half a second, so we barely notice it.   Your brain has limited attentional resources. If you have ever tried to focus on multiple things at once, you have likely discovered you could not fully pay attention to all of them. In some cases, you might even notice that some things seem to simply slide past you unnoticed. In one well-known demonstration of attentional blink, a series of letters and numbers are flashed on a screen in a rapid sequence. The viewer is asked to look for a specific pair of items, such as the number 2 and 7 and press a button when they spot the target numbers. In many cases, observers fail to see the second target when it occurs soon after the first one. Because attention is limited, focusing on the first target depletes these limited resources, essentially making the observer blind to the second target. Why Does It Occur? Some experts suggest that the attentional blink serves as a way to help the brain ignore distractions and focus on processing the first target. When an event occurs, the brain needs time to process it before it can move on to the next event. If a second event occurs during this critical processing time, it will simply be missed. There are a few different theories that seek to explain the attentional blink. Inhibition theory suggests that perceptual confusion occurs during the process of identifying targets, resulting in an attention gap. Interference theory posits that when different things competing for our attention, we may end up focusing on the wrong target. The attentional capacity theory proposes that when presented with two targets, the first target may take up too much of the available attention resources, making it more difficult to process the sight of the second target. Another popular theory is the two-stage processing theory. According to this idea, processing a series of items involves two different stages. The first stage involves noticing the targets, while the second involves actually processing the items so that they can be reported.   Attentional Blink in the Real World While many of the demonstrations of attentional blink involve rapid serial visual presentations in lab settings, this phenomenon can also influence how you experience events in the real world.   For example, imagine youre driving your car down a busy road when you notice a car in front of you has starting to drift into the other lane. Your attention becomes briefly focused on the other car, which limits your ability to attend to other traffic for about half a second. While that half-second period might seem very small, critical things can happen that can affect your safety. A deer might leap out into the road. The car in front of you might slam on its brakes. You might even start to drift slightly into the other lane. The attentional blink might be tiny, but it can certainly have serious consequences in real-world settings.

Breakthrough Success of Fortune 500 Companies due to Performance Management Free Essay Example, 4250 words

Performance management systems can provide a variety of benefits to companies which include clearly articulated strategic goals, valid evaluation data, and recognition of contributions made by the employees. It is essential for such benefits to be realized that a company maintains an on-going feedback cycle along with and fair and equitable pay. In a performance management practices survey, Bernthal, Sumlin, Davis, and Rogers (1997) found that the majority of CEOs surveyed, 63 percent, believed their performance management system drove the key factors associated with the business strategy. An even greater majority, approximately 79 percent, perceived their performance management system as driving the people or the cultural strategies that maximize human assets. This shows that there is a definite connection between theoretical viewpoints on performance management systems and the actual business practices used by various companies. In real world cases, performance management systems seem to link the fields of human resource management and human resource development. Performance management processes promise to enhance the quality of organizational and individual decisions, enhance the relationship between the individual and the organization, and provide a foundation for organizational development and change efforts (Murphy Cleveland, 1995). NATO and Terrorism Free Essays

â€Å"A key feature of terrorism is that it is directed at a wider audience or target than the immediate victims. It is one of the earliest forms of psychological warfare. An inevitable corollary is that terrorism entails attacks on random and symbolic targets, including civilians, in order to create a climate of extreme fear among a wider group. We will write a custom essay sample on NATO and Terrorism or any similar topic only for you Order Now † (Buckley and Fawn, pg. 1) Whenever, any country or a nation is at a critical stage and it feels that someone might capture his homeland, and then he bears the courage to fight for his homeland as for the love of his country. There are special rules and principles according to which countrymen can protect their nation from enemies. An alliance was formed by the European countries and the US when they were facing attacks from the Soviet Nations. To fight for their land, they created an alliance which is called NATO. The abbreviation of NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was created to promote harmony among the member countries and throughout the world. The basic responsibilities of the NATO soldiers were to remove the people whose lives were at stake near the borderline so that they could be accommodated too much safer places then those. In this regard, every member country was bound to follow all the instructions of this allied force in connection of the co-operation and peace among these countries. When this allied force was created there were about 51 countries in it and now it comprises about 189 countries. Basically, history tells that it was the unity of all the European nations, United States and Canada against a Soviet attack on their participating or friend nations. â€Å"The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), as it often has been, is once again at the center of this debate. Today NATO is once again a subject of concern and debate. Member states have put the organization through a major structural overhaul, but there continue to be doubts concerning its future in the absence of a threat†. (Cohen et al, pg. 20) The NATO is said to be an allied force as it is so it fights against terrorism but the main point to this topic is that if the NATO is fighting against terrorism then terrorism may surely be affecting it in many ways. The most favorable prove in this regard is the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in the Washington District of the United States of America. â€Å"After the events of September 11 2001, a stunned US President George W. Bush declared that ‘night fell on a different world. There was indeed horror around much of the globe that a new and insidious precedent had been set for terror against states, making everyone vulnerable.† (Buckley and Fawn, pg. 1) This effected the reputation and name of the NATO. While within 24 hours of the attack the NATO declared and proved that it was a plan to destroy the image of the NATO and somewhere they have succeeded. But the real plan was to kill the soldiers of the NATO. However, gradually the planes and aircrafts turned towards the WTC and bumped into the world’s highest building. Till then the NATO has been trying to curb terrorism and is in fight of this fearful activity and its activists. However, nowadays, the NATO is working against terrorism in Afghanistan and is trying its level best to damage the hideouts of those jihad militants. The NATO fully recognized its duties after the September 11 2001 attacks, which proved to be harmful for the works of the NATO. After that they started an active participation in fight against terrorism and their first operation was chained outside Europe. The North Atlantic Council, which is the central body of the NATO, directs it from where to start and all the NATO officials have to present their work history or their efforts to this Head Quarter named the North Atlantic Council. The NATO militants are offered their services from here and one is punctual and strict to abide the rules and principles of the Head Quarter. Recently, the 2006 attacks in Turkey by terrorist groups were highly condemned by the NATO and at a conference held at the NAC0 the base commander declared his sympathy with the people of Turkey and strongly condemned the attitudes of the terrorist groups. The point is only that if these terrorist groups and their militants want us to move from their places then they should clearly come and fight with the NATO’s allied forces, while in this way they are not opening the ways of sympathy for them but are creating an emotional of hate in the hearts and minds of the people. This conflict and war of terror between NATO and the terrorists have made the lives of people miserable. They do not care about who is living or who dies. The conflicting situation is continoulsy-disturbing the lives of people and is forcing them to kill themselves because of fear and terror but who cares because nobody would leave this war. Everyone should standby his conditions and all is well that end is well. People would die and last of the entire world would be free of us. Terrorist attacks in Algeria are also increasing but all are helpless in front of the terrorist forces. According to a NATO press release, the Secretary General of the NATO strongly condemning the attacks said that on behalf of all the brave and courageous commandos of the NATO, I strongly condemn the terrorist attacks on Algeria and this is a promise that the NATO will always stand by the Algerians as our Mediterranean teams is also working. We hope for further development in decreasing the number of terrorists from the terrorist affected areas because our teams are working there to combat with the terrorists. However, after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the NATO has become more serious and effective in playing its complete role against terrorism. Now, the forces of the NATO are removing people who are living near the terrorist camps especially in Afghanistan. The forces of the NATO fear that these people might be victimized in their context so it would be better to remove and relocate them to a much safer place. The NATO has been much supported and encouraged by its partners in regard of the fight against terrorism. The member countries are always present to help the NATO manage voluntary camps and they also launch campaigns for the betterment of theses courageous soldiers. Nowadays the plan, which is residing among the partner countries, comprises of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the NATO-Russia Council. These two comprise of the supporting countries that have been with the NATO since its formation and have supported this alliance against terrorism in every positive means. Apart from its member countries, the NATO is also sharing up its part with other international organizations and is taking and giving information to those organizations so that their law enforcement agencies could be proven helpful for the NATO in finding fearful and wanted people. In accordance with all of the above statements it has been proved that the NATO is trying its level best to curb the germ named terrorism but is continuously failing in it because the rising umber of crimes and criminals. However, a team like the NATO should be within every country so that it could have a worldwide terror-curbing network. â€Å"Israel and its overseas network in the US†¦. (threatens) not only the oppressed people of Palestine (and Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Syria and any other state Israel takes aim at) but the rights of people throughout the world.† He stresses we have mass public opinion on our side nearly everywhere outside the US, and it’s gaining resonance here as well. It sees Israel and our actions in support of the Israeli state as the greatest of all threats to world peace and stability. Petras ends his book with one final impassioned call to arms: â€Å"Let’s move ahead and de-colonize our country, our minds and politics as a first step in reconstituting a democratic republic, free of entangling colonial and neo-imperial alliances.† (Petras, 2006) It has been proved that what were the aims and objectives on which the NATO was created. However, it is reminded again that when the US and UK colonies and European nations faced severe attacks from the sides of the Soviet Unions and Soviet nations, then they decided to create an allied force named the NATO. The NATO is supposed to be helpful in curbing the roots of terrorism and it is doing it as its prime duty but the greatest terrorist shock that rocked the whole world as well as the NATO was the 9/11 attacks. â€Å"The September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States have made a smooth joint planning and coordination process even more urgent. While NATO invoked for the first time in its history its collective defense clause, it seems likely that the United States will coordinate its planned attacks on terrorist targets outside the European theater with individual allies rather than through the North Atlantic Council. As a result of the attacks, Washington will be reluctant to add more resources to Balkan peace management, at least in the short term†. (Cohen et al, pg. 74) After these severe attacks, the NATO became more terror and fear conscious and now it has started its operations in Afghanistan and the Ukraine Mediterranean area. However, besides all of this conflicts and situation, terrorism has always been a wall in the social and humanitarian services of the NATO. Wherever the NATO services try to spread peace and harmony, there is a bomb blast reported and same of every attack, the name and the blame comes directly on the allied force the NATO. The NATO has been contributing its services since 1955 and the countries, which are supporting it, should understand to announce an increase in the security of the soldiers. In that, if anybody is severely injured or dies during the military operations, the there should be special arrangements to remind those soldiers who contributed their part for the beloved country land. These soldiers should be regarded as a part of an active and alive society so that the forth-coming generation could remind the services of the beloved ones who sacrificed their lives for the love for their country. In that, it should be remembered and recognized that if these brave soldiers are neither paid tributes for their services or are never recognized for their never ending courage, we will lose these brave soldiers and then we should be ready to face another shock of a new Soviet or another union. Why Do Conservatives Disagree On The Topic Of Marriage Equality

Human beings want the same things in life. Every person wants a prospect for success, healthy kids, and a condition in which no one is suffering. The disagreement is how to realize the objectives. Conservatives and liberals in the United States differ on how to raise a happy family, among other crucial topics. While conservatives oppose attempts to legalize marriage equality, the other class of thought supports it.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Why Do Conservatives Disagree On The Topic Of Marriage Equality? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Advocates of marriage equality contend that everyone has a right to choose whom to marry irrespective of gender. According to Corvino (2013), as illustrated in his book ‘What’s wrong with homosexuality,’ same sex marriage is becoming popular despite the intensive opposition it faces. He thinks that the impassioned marriage debate will continue as long as conservatives still hold to their opinion. Americans should reflect on conservatives’ views on morality and values, traditions, holiness, and respect for the marriage institution to make better decisions concerning the topic of marriage equality. Foremost, conservatives consider that legalizing marriage equality would weaken the meaning and honor of the institution of marriage. People from different cultural, social, and political backgrounds define marriage differently. While in some contexts, marriage is a love covenant; in others, it is a legal set up enabling two or more parties to live together (Corvino 2013). Conservatives do not agree on the latter definition. They hold that marriage is an honorable institution, and that factors such as the soaring rate of divorce has weakened its meaning and respect. They say allowing same sex marriage would enable more people to engage in non-serious relationships, refer to them as marriages, and continue weakening the marriage insti tution (Knight 2013). Therefore, according to Knight, the society should not consider same sex couples as a family, as they cannot perform essential family roles such as procreation. Additionally, conservatives disagree with liberals indicating that marriage equality cannot preserve family values and traditions. They are of the opinion that legalizing homosexuality would weaken society values that are critical to the community’s existence because the basic units of a society are the traditional man, woman, and children living together as a family (Blechner 2009).Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? This shows that the loss of meaning of the family is the core rationale for the deteriorating society’s traditi ons and values. If conservatives are accurate, allowing gay family relationships will make the situation worse. Apart from cultures and values, most conservatives are concerned that marriage is a sacred institution and allowing marriage equality is a sin (Sitman 2013). The religious community, in particular, holds that homosexuality is irreligious However, since almost all regions consider same sex marriage out of place, they think the whole society may support the opinion. The argument is that since almost all Americans are religious, it is mistaken to bow down and legalize homosexuality. At the same time, conservatives have dismissed allegations that joining marriage is a civil and not a religious right. The group has argued that the constitution of the United States evolved out of Biblical laws, and the government should implement it appropriately to guide everyone to keep the laws of God. As a result, conservatives believe adopting homosexuality laws is morally and religiously w rong. Another concept that opponents of marriage equality has brought forward is that the gay lifestyle is a risky one that leads to medical complications. One of the reasons they provide is research findings that indicate gay standards of living reduce life expectancy and may cause mental disorders. They contend that credible sources indicate that life expectancy of gays is 20 years less than for ordinary people. The findings liken homosexuality lifestyle to that of tobacco smoking (Seba 2011). Due to health problems associated with homosexuality, the opponents of marriage equality think that authorities should not promote it. Additionally the opponents argue that marriage equality is a slippery slope in the area of legality. They disagree with those who want the society to accept marriage equality on the ground that it does not hurt anyone (Temkar 2013). According to most conservatives, the reasoning could start a series of reactions that might wipe out the need for marriage.Adver tising We will write a custom essay sample on Why Do Conservatives Disagree On The Topic Of Marriage Equality? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The team says that if people accept the reasoning, it would not be strange for individuals to marry animals, their sisters, parents, or dolls. Conservatives believe that these marriage options may sound absurd, but there are people who would want to associate with them. They think it is not right to suggest that if a person’s decision does not have a direct negative impact, the society should cordon it. The consequences of accepting homosexuality may haunt the society many years after setting a precedent today. This indicates that conservatives consider homosexuality as intolerable. Another problem with marriage equality, according to conservatives, is that it could mislead kids regarding their social obligations. Young children who live with homosexual parents would learn that peo ple of a similar gender can pro-create. Children gain knowledge regarding social expectations from their immediate surroundings. Teaching children regarding the essentiality of family traditions can be impossible when the society subject them to such a confusing environment (Reach and Teach 2013).One of the reasons conservatives oppose same sex relations is the need to take care of children. Further, the opponents of marriage equality argue that allowing same sex marriage is opening a door for social evils such as prostitution and adultery, as some individuals join same sex marriage for financial, emotional, or social benefits (Masten Schmidtberger 2011). There are people who seek same sex partners to acquire material wealth, but have no interest taking care of their families. As a result, they engage in risky sexual behaviors, which often lead to acquiring diseases and health conditions such as HIV/AIDS and syphilis. Apart from the health risks, homosexuals cannot bear children. C onservatives argue that these individuals need to have children, and since they cannot afford, they engage in child trafficking. This may cause them to encounter legal problems they would otherwise have avoided. Finally, conservatives do not oppose the need to raise healthy children, lead happy lives, and respect human rights. They want the society to be mindful of long-term consequences of allowing same sex marriages.Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Obviously, liberals refer to human rights as the reason for supporting marriage equality. Conservatives, on the other hand, mention the need to take care of the younger generation. Free Essays on Echoes From The Macabre

In the story â€Å"Echoes from the Macabre† written by Daphne Du Maurier, all the characters have interesting traits. Out of all these characters, there are two that caught my eye. These characters are the two twin sisters that Laura met in Venice. She believes these sisters changed her life. In the very beginning of the story, the two sisters seem very mysterious. Laura and her husband, John notices the sisters staring at them while they are eating in a restaurant. Laura becomes overwhelmed and follows one of the sisters to the bathroom. Laura finds out that one of the sisters is psychic and observes the presence of their daughter, Christine who has passed away. She informs Laura that her sister who is blind saw Christine sitting with her and John in the restaurant. She says that Christine is happy. After a long conversation with the sister in the bathroom, Laura returns to her table to meet John and tells him the news. Laura is extremely happy while John expresses feelings of anger. He refuses to believe that such a thing is possible because Christine is dead. They finish eating and leave the restaurant to go tour the city of Venice. While they are sightseeing, John notices the sisters many times. He feels like they are being followed. He hopes that Laura does not notice them. He is irritated about what the sisters said about Christine and finds it very difficult to believe. Laura, on the other hand, has never been happier. She wonders if Christine is by their side every second of the day. The sisters are mysterious throughout the entire story. The author never mentions any major details about these characters. These characters are prominent and help the plot to grow and become extremely interesting throughout the story. Without these characters, the story would not be entertaining. At the end of the story, nothing is resolved with these characters. The reader is not sure if they were telling the truth about Christine.... Marketers are responsible for bringing in leads, sales, people big tasks to support core business metrics. Garrett’s book describes taking the formula, process, tips and tricks, and things that work and don’t for and making them available to anybody to use and implement in their business and marketing process. Gartner’s Hype Cycle: How new technology is adopted. When content marketing took shape a few years back, all of a sudden, everyone is adopting it and reworking their marketing teams, creating content, doing blogging, building email lists, and other tasks. Content marketing made a lot of promises to us. Now, Garrett believes we are entering the trough of disillusionment. We adopted content marketing, but what about those big promises that were made? What about the results? Why are you not getting the results your were promised? How do marketing teams provide business value? Content marketing need to be reinvented. Garrett describes the copy cat epidemic in marketing. There is so much free content online where pieces of strategies, tactics, and other items are copied and pasted. However, it does not create an entire picture or blueprint. The goal is to create a framework from start to finish process on how to find something unique to your business that only you can do and be successful with. Something that stands out and gets results. Creating Competition-Free Content: Not only your business and products is in competition, but your marketing is in competition with other marketing. Find a way to break past that barrier created by competitors. The book, Blue Ocean Strategy, refers to the Bloody Red Ocean, which is full of competition and where businesses are fighting each other to stand out they’re at war with each other. However, the Blue Ocean is wide-open and uncontested. Your free to swim around and move about because you have successfully been able to differentiate yourself from the competition. To differentiate your content marketing, focus on your topics, how you create content, and how to connect that content and share it with your customers. 10X reference: look at what you are doing and ask if what you are doing will help your team multiply results, including increasing sales leads and the number of visitors to your Website. A powerful way to cause engineers to rethink and reframe what they’re doing. 10X Manifesto: focuses on how so much of marketing is about mindset when it comes to how we do and approach things. Results or Die: 10X marketers work in a results or die oriented business, not 10 percenters allowed. Many think of marketing as a process for things they do marketing is the blog, social media channels, conference booth, etc. There’s all these deliverables that a marketing team creates and hands off to others, such as the sales and support teams. Marketers are not here to produce Web ads or build a Website. They’re here to help produce business results and help grow companies. 10X marketers understand that growth requires failure, strength is in progress, not perfection. Teams that embrace failure (fail fast) understand that it is not about failure but acknowledging imperfection.
